To Fear Us
~ Collector of phobias and charade of false innocence ~
Name:
Otto
Number Placement:
His number, 525,600, isn't visible to the eye. It is printed on the inside of his inner fabric, just beside the seam. The fine print and size of the digit could suggest that it is associated with something such as a date, a time, or perhaps a barcode number.
Origin unknown.
Gender:
Male.
Years since Creation:
N/A
Date of Creation:
October 10th
Alignment:
Lone.
He might possibly join a true alignment if it comes to that, but he prefers solitude.
Height:
6.3 inches
Fabric:
Hemp Linen (white)
Metal:
Aluminum
Anomalies:
Otto's optics are uneven (one is built a little higher up on his face), which causes him to tilt his head in odd directions when he is trying to examine something.
Otto has a tag sewn onto his upper back (reading "cotton" with the "c" and "n" crossed out), as well as a pillowy mound of light auburn hair that is constantly falling over his optics and causing him to smack straight into things.
Accessories:
Otto has three buckles across his chest that hold shut his seam, as well as two buckles hanging off the material above his wrists. The buckles dangling from his arms actually fit together, meaning another stitchpunk could bind his sleeves together if they wanted to (in a straitjacket-like manner).
Abilities:
At first glance, Otto appears to have far more disabilities than abilities. He can't sew to save his life, he tends to hunch over and curl into a frightened ball when attacked, and he is unbalanced and likely to trip or swerve off course when he's trying to flee (due to his uneven optics).
Otto, however, has an unusual artistic side to him. He can't paint or draw (only stick figures, perhaps), but he plays on words and tends to release a string of poetic verses if he becomes truly inspired by something. These occasions are rare, and may only happen when he thinks he is alone or in the company of someone he trusts.
Weapon(s):
When it comes to weapons, Otto displays a clear aichmophobia (the fear of pointy/sharp objects). He will tense up in terror if he sees anything resembling a knife, saw, scalpel, spear, scissor blade, broken glass, hook, nail, needle, even a sharp pencil. His intense fear of such things, however, is curious as he seems to be more afraid of holding these objects than he is of getting cut by them.
In a nutshell, he refuses to carry any weapon.
Appearance:
(now for a very crappy and outdated sketch weehoo)
- Metal is Aluminum
- Fabric is dull (slightly stained) white
- Hair is a light brown color
Personality:
Otto's state of mind is like a whirring, buzzing motor that rarely slows.
To any passerby, he appears to be suffering from panphobia (also known as omniphobia) - the literal fear of everything. He is constantly shaky, twitchy, and scanning his surroundings with a fearful expression. Sometimes it's clear what is setting Otto on edge, and other times it could be something as simple as a small sigh from someone else, or the sound of a can tumbling down the side of a rubbish pile in the distance. He isolates himself from most other stitchpunks.
His fear is mainly directed toward anything resembling the human anatomy (stitchpunks, human corpses, barbie dolls, etc), and when first meeting any stitchpunk he will automatically assume that he shouldn't be near them, and attempts to flee. Despite his never-ceasing paranoia, Otto's trust can be earned so long as someone grants him an act of kindness.
Once you have his trust, Otto's nervousness drains away to reveal a hidden side of himself. A side that is thoughtful, curious, and poetic. Once distracted from his overwhelming sense of terror, he tends to sit for hours and enjoy the sky, mumbling small poems and lyrics with a false sense of safety much resembling the temporary peace in the eye of a hurricane.
He is loyal to his companions up to a point, however. If any of them carries a visible weapon, he will tense up and make an excuse to slink away. In a situation in which a companion is being attacked, he is more likely to tense up and stand still and useless. The question if Otto actually can fight back is a mystery, as he has never made an attempt to hurt another... almost as if he's afraid of what might happen if he tried.
On a side note, Otto is fond (and oddly possessive) of anything fabric-like that resembles a blanket. He tends to hoard things such as socks, handkerchiefs, shirts, scraps of fabric, and other such materials, and will fall into an intense nervous fit if anyone tries to take these away from him.
Other Information:
Otto is one of the only known patients to escape a lab that harvested qualities of human souls. Most patients brought to the lab were dehumanized, created into profitable objects, and often experimented to death once they outlived their purpose. During his time spent there, Otto suffered unspeakable horrors, torture, and had his soul nearly ripped down the center during an experiment that was meant to clone it.
After the experiment, he became much less rebellious against the scientists and became withdrawn, fearful, and childish. In an attempt to correct his behaviors, the scientists implanted a parasite in his brain (Toxoplasma gondii: a parasite that links to reckless behavior, inhibition of rational thought and targets the neural circuitry involved in fear). One of he scientists in the lab took pity on Otto, and stepped in to help him escape when he was nearing the end of his ropes. After changing his name and recovering from critical malnutrition, Otto lived a few more years of his human life outside of the lab, free, but with the parasite stirring inside him wherever he went, blocking out his fears and his ability to truly think things over.
Once he became a stitchpunk, however, that convenient little parasite was left behind with his human brain. After having lived with no need to manage fear his soul quickly became consumed by it. His inability to handle and bear the weight of each and every little concern he experiences during the day is still with him, and it is the driving force behind his constant terror and trembling.
He doesn't remember how he ended up as a stitchpunk, nor does he recall much of what happened at the lab or who he might have been before it (his past name is now lost to him, so he wears a little tag with his "new" name due to a fear of forgetting that one too). When he does remember anything, he might voice it matter-of-factly without any realization that he remembered. The next moment, the memory will be gone again.
As for the cloning experiment that took place during the lab, it actually was a success. Otto never learned of this, nor does he know that the clone of his soul was put into a stitchpunk body for storage.
... and that it might be walking around in this new world.
